Redes Natural Park, declared as such in 1996, is located in the central-eastern sector of the Cantabrian Mountains Range, in the south of Asturias, occupying an area of ​​37,803 ha. within the councils of Case and Sobrescobio. In 2001 it is declared as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It is also a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) since 2003.

 

Redes Natural Park, is covered mostly by wooded masses, fundamentally of beech, the most characteristic plant species of the Park. In total, the beech forests occupy 3/4 of the Park surface, and together with the rest of the forests and prairies they serve as an excellent habitat for multiple species, both flora and fauna. In addition, we will find alders, birches, ash trees, maples, oaks, yews and holly.

 

Among the fauna, within the group of mammals, four protected species live in the Park: the brown bear, the otter, and two species of bats, the cave bat and the Geoffroy bat. In addition, singular species such as the Iberian Desman and Iberian Wolf and others such as chamois, roe deer, wild boar, martens, badgers, foxes ... also inhabit the Park. Among the birds, it is possible to emphasize to the endangered Cantabrian grouse, and also we can find the real eagle, alimoche, peregrine falcon, owl,...

 

A territory, whose spectacular and richness, both in natural and cultural values, and the state of conservation, have been recognized on multiple occasions and will not leave you indifferent.

 

Program:

 

Meeting point: Interpretation Center of the Redes Natural Park, in Campo de Caso.                     Duration: 4 days.

 

Day 1: Bezanes - Brañagallones.

On our first day of trekking, we will leave the village of Bezanes (658m) along a road, concreted only in the higher slopes, which in gentle ascension is introduced into the heart of the Natural Park until reaching the beautiful sheepfold of Brañagallones (1.240m), where is the beautiful refuge that will give us shelter. The path beginof a leafy forest of chestnut trees, opening the landscape immediately in the heathlands that precede the “Texu la oración”. The ascension is made from here more comfortable. After passing the Grandiella herd, the itinerary becomes more steep, between beech and birch, reach the “Argayu'l Llobu”. Next, the “Tunnel of the Crestón” is crossed, after which the leafy beeches that populate the Redes mountain can be seen. From here, on a gentle ascent, we reach the prairies of Brañagallones, which is the result of the natural filling of an old lake, of glacier origin.

Day 2: Brañagallones - Peña'l Vientu - Lake Ubales - Brañagallones. 

We’ll start the day in a southerly direction through the valley of the Monasteriu River, through a leafy beech forest, reaching immediately the mound of Valdebezón, at which point the track ends. From Valdebezón, the itinerary continues to the west, leaving on the left the sharp ridges of the Cuchilla, to ascend to the fields above the spur, where we will enjoy the impressive views of the majestic beech forests of Redes and the circus on which It locates the Vega of Brañagallones. We’ll ascend to the top of the ridge, and from here we’ll ascend the hillside to reach the Peña'l Vientu peak (2.000m), privileged viewpoint from where we’ll get some of the best views of the heart of the Natural Park. We’ll descend towards Collada les Aguyes, to continue along the south slope of Peña 'l Vientu, until reaching the pass of the Raya l'Acebal. From this point, we will take the path that, through the Xara’s pass, reaches the Ubales Lake. We’ll return to take the road to Mericueria, the itinerary enters the forest of Redes through a narrow path that, after crossing several times the river, links with the trail that leads back to the Vega of Brañagallones.

Day 3: Brañagallones - Cantu'l Osu - Brañagallones.

We leave the refuge, towards the nearby sheppfold of Valdebezón, following the valley of the Monasteriu River, among centuries-old beech forests. From Valdebezón, it is followed by a steep path that, between beeches, is perched to the Les Príes ridge, at the height of Arenes pass. From here, to cross the Príes ridge, reaching immediately the Puercu pass, from where it is enjoyed of a wonderful perspective of the forests of Redes Mount, the braves of L'Ablanosa, Busumberón and Vega Pociellu and the heights of Valdebezón peak, Peña' l Vientu or the Mongayu. From here, we continue to the left the rocky walls of Xerru les Planes and El Porron, until reaching the Cerrosa pass, with beautiful views towards the Vega of Brañagallones. The itinerary continues now, changing the slope, leaving to the right the heights of the Xerru les Príes to reach the Muezca pass, almost above Brañagallones. We’ll descend to the meadows of Ferramoru, and from here we’ll ascend to reach the summit of Cantu'l Osu (1.800m), privileged watchtower, which offers one of the most extensive views of the Redes Natural Park, including the Picos de Europa. We leave this wonderful summit and descend to the Brañagallones Refuge, where we will spend our last night.

Day 4: Route of the Alba.

We leave the wonderful refuge of Brañagallones, to return to the village of Bezanes, where we will take the vehicles, and go to the beautiful village of Soto de Agues, to walk one of the most popular and beautiful routes of Asturias, the Route of the Alba, declared Natural Monument. This way, was the step used formerly by shepherds and muleteers, to reach the neighboring valley and council of Aller. The road, soon penetrates the narrowness of the Alba river. The Campurru area is immediately reached, where Carmen mine carriages are still preserved. At a short distance, you will find the braves of La Vega, a crossroads of paths where the trail ends, taking a narrow path that leads to the Llaímo. From here, the road runs between high vertical walls, carved along overhangs dug into the rock and bordering a torrential stream where waterfalls of up to ten meters high, rapids and wells, reaching the end of the Cross of the Rivers, suddenly opening the landscape to a patch of prairies, dominated by the foliage of the beech trees of Llaímo and Retriñón peak, vertex of the councils of Aller, Caso and Sobrescobio. At the end of the route, we return by the same path to Soto de Agues, where we will conclude our adventure of four days, by the beautiful Redes Natural Park.
