Reconquest Route / GR-202
The Route of the Reconquest, is a long-distance road GR-202, which runs, according to Christian legend, along the historic road that Muslim troops followed after their defeat in Covadonga at the hands of Pelayo's troops. It is a demanding journey, which runs through the heart of the Picos de Europa, passing through emblematic enclaves such as the Lakes of Covadonga, the Cares Gorge, Poncebos, Bulnes, Sotres, the ports of Áliva, ... to end in the Cantabrian village of Cosgaya. A very complete trek, which will impress you with the variety and beauty of its landscapes.
For five days, we will cross the Picos de Europa National Park, staying in spectacular places and knowing some of the most emblematic and beautiful places of this spectacular National Park. A trekking that you can not miss.
Program:
Meeting point: Covadonga. Duration: 5 días.
Day 1: On our first day of trekking, depart from the Basilica Covadonga (260m), to ascend to paradise Covadonga Lakes (1,100m), where we'll stay at the Vega de Enol's hut, adjacent the idyllic landscape lake of the same name and with beautiful views of the main peaks of the Western Massif. Important slope for the first time, through the Orandi, Severín and Fana lands and through beautiful forests. If the day is clear, we will ascend to Porra de Enol summit (1.269m), near the Refuge to enjoy beautiful views.
Day 2: Demanding and precious day that travels through the most beautiful Vegas of the Picos de Europa and the Path of Cares. We start from the La Vega de Enol Refuge towards Enol Lake, bordering it to reach Ercina Lake and then head to the Majada de Belbín, a beautiful place. We continue to Vega Maor, until we reach this great valley, another place of reference of this beautiful Massif. From Vega Maor, we will descend to the Route of Cares, to make a stretch of this spectacular gorge, until we reach Poncebos, where we will spend our second night.
Day 3: During this day, we will visit two of the most beautiful villages in the National Park and also in Asturias. First we will go to the village of Bulnes, nestled in a beautiful place, with the peculiarity of not having access by road. We will continue towards the Pandébano pass, to enjoy awesome views over the high peaks of the Central massif and the Picu Urriellu, mountain symbol of Los Picos de Europa. From Pandébano, we will descend towards Sotres shepherfolds and after a small ascent, we will reach the beautiful village of Sotres, where we will spend our third night.
Day 4: On this day, we’ll descend to Sotres shepherfolds, and we will walk through the valley of the Duje River, which divides the Central and Eastern Massifs, so the path is really overwhelming, always flanked by huge mountains on both sides. We will reach the Áliva passes, a beautiful place dominated by the great mountain of Peña Vieja and very close to the Fuente Dé cable car. We will spend the night at the Hotel de Áliva.
