Anillo de Picos - Central Massif

The Urrielles Massif or Central Massif of the Picos de Europa, located between the valleys excavated by the Cares and Duje rivers, is undoubtedly the most rugged, the one with the greatest unevenness and where the highest and most representative peaks of the Picos de Europa National Park are located, such as Torrecerredo, maximum altitude of these mountains and of the entire Cantabrian Mountains with 2,648 meters or the Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes), authentic symbol of the Asturian mountain and the National Park and place where, since its conquest in 1905, the most beautiful pages of mountaineering in the Iberian Peninsula have been written. It is in this massif where these mountains reach their maximum expression, with a unbeatable high mountain environment, concentrating a large number of peaks in a relatively small area, unmatched in any other mountain range on the peninsula, where there are other higher mountains, but not so wild, wild and inaccessible.

For five days we will travel, from refuge to refuge, this impressive and demanding Massif, knowing some of the most emblematic and beautiful places in the Picos de Europa.

Program:

Meeting point: Arenas de Cabrales car park.            Duration: 4 days.

Day 1:On our first day of trekking, we will start from Puente Poncebos(218m), to carry out the famous, popular and spectacular Cares Route, one of the most impressive gorges in the world, to the Leonese town of Cain(460m). We will continue going up the Cares River, to the plain and Mount Corona, where we will visit the Chorco de los lobos, to continue to the beautiful town of Cordiñanes, where we will stay at the Hotel Tombo, where we will spend our first night of the trekking. This beginning of trekking, will serve as a "warm-up" for the unevenness that awaits us in later days.

Day 2:A beautiful day, in which we will enter the Massif Central, and which will take us from Cordiñanes (880m), saving an important unevenness, until the Collado Jermoso refuge (2,046m). The route begins by rapidly ascending towards the exit walls of the via ferrata, where we will walk along a narrow terrace to reach the beautiful Asotín beech forest, which will leave us at the Vega de Asotín. From here we will ascend to the Collado Jermoso refuge, located in one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in the entire National Park. Located on the edge of a precipice and surrounded by the steep peaks of the group ofllembrio, in front of the spectacular Friero's Tower, and with magnificent views of the Valdeon Valley and the Cornión Massif, with Peña Santa standing out. Despite the hard day, everyone will feel satisfied to stay in such a place, especially after enjoying its spectacular sunset.
