Hiking Picos de Europa

Peña Castil peak, with 2,444 meters of altitude, is one of the main peaks of Picos de Europa National Park, both for its beauty and its location, very close to Picu Urriellu, being an excellent and very close viewpoint towards it. From its summit, in addition to Picu Urriellu, we can enjoy magnificent views of much of the Central Massif, the Duje valley and the entire western slope of the Eastern Massif, with its highest peak La Morra de Lechugales (curiously at the same altitude than Peña Castil) in the first place.

Peña Castil peak, has one of the many cavities found in the Picos de Europa, characteristic of the limestone rock that forms this unique massifs. The Peña Castil Ice Cave is a large cavity that keeps the ice formed during the winter, practically all year round. At its entrance, you can see a large column of ice and the floor is made of a sheet of thick ice. At the edges there are sinks, so we must to be extremely careful and not approach to the cave walls.

Program:

Meeting point: Parking of the Poncebos funicular. Duration: 1 day.

We start the route from the Invernales del Texu (880m) near Sotres town, going up the Duje Valley, which separates the Central and Eastern massifs, so the walk through the valley is overwhelming, with mountains on either side of the way. Once reached the Vegas del Toro (1067 m), we turn right to begin a long climb up the Fresnedal channel, which will leave us in the Cambureru Pass (2,051m), from which we only have to ascend the magnificent slope that goes to the summit of Peña Castil (2,444 m).

On the way down, the Ice Cave is visited and later we'll go through Las Moñas Channel, to Pandébano Pass (1,212 m), from here we'll descend to Invernales del Texu, thus completing a beautiful and very complete circular route .
