The Urrielles Massif or Central Massif of the Picos de Europa , located between the valleys carved by rivers Cares and Duje is undoubtedly the most rugged, that higher slopes presents and where the highest and most representative peaks of the National Park of Picos de Europa are located, as Torrecerredo with 2,648 meters, maximum altitude of these mountains and all the Cantabrian Mountains Range, or Picu Urriellu (Naranjo de Bulnes) authentic symbol of the Asturian mountains and National Park and place where the most beautiful pages of mountaineering in the Iberian Peninsula have been written since its conquest in 1905. It's in this massif where these mountains reach its climax, with an awesome mountain environment concentrating a large number of peaks in a relatively small surface, unmatched in any other mountains of Spain, where there are other highest mountains, but not so wild and inaccessible.

For five days we will visit the Asturian part of this impressive and demanding Massif, knowing some of the most emblematic and beautiful places in the Picos de Europa .

Program:

Meeting point: Arenas de Cabrales village parking.                           Duration: 5 days.

Day 1: On our first day of trekking, we will depart from Puente Poncebos (218m), to head through the Canal del Texu to the beautiful town of Bulnes (650m), with no road access. From Bulnes we head to the Collado de Pandébano (1,220m) along a beautiful path between native forest, from which we can observe the Picu Urriellu / Naranjo de Bulnes from various points. From the Collado de Pandébano we will only have a small climb to reach the La Terenosa Refuge (1,315m), where we will spend the night.

Day 2: We start from the La Terenosa Refuge and head towards the Collado Vallejo along the classic path that will take us to the Urriellu / Naranjo de Bulnes Refuge , located in the Vega de Urriellu 1,960m below the impressive west face of Picu Urriellu, with more than 500 meters of height, authentic reference of the Spanish mountaineering. An unforgettable place, both for the beautiful and for the symbolic. We will spend our second night in this emblematic place.

Day 3: Spectacular day in which we will walk around Picu Urriellu . Starting from the Refuge under the West face, we will skirt the Picu on its North and East sides , ascending until we reach the Hou after the Picu (2,240m) to see its South side. Then we will descend to Hoyu Carnizoso and then ascend to Collado Camburero (2,050m), from where we will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Eastern Massif. We descend the Fresnedal Canal to the beautiful Vegas del Toro (1,070m) from where we continue along a comfortable track descending the Duje Valley to the Invernales del Texu (880m). A short climb will leave us in the beautiful town of Sotres (1,050m) , where we will spend the night at the hostel after a spectacular day.

Day 4: From Sotres town we'll descend to Invernales del Texu to head Pandébano Pass, from where if the weather is good, we'll ascend to the summit of Peña Main (1,600m), an impressive viewpoint towards the three massifs of the National Park. We'll return to Pandébano Pass to descend to the pretty town of Bulnes (650m), where we'll spend the night in its cozy hostel.

 

Day 5: On our last day, we only have to descend from Bulnes (648m), inaccessible by vehicles and only reachable by the Texu channel or by the Pandébano pass until the construction of a funicular from Poncebos, by the Texu channel to Poncebos (218m) the end of our beautiful adventure.

  • Any other item not mentioned as included.

 

Notes:

  • In Refuges picnics can be purchased for each day, avoiding carry weight.

  • There are blankets in Refuges. With a thin lead sheet sack or summer sleeping bag, its enough.

  • The route can be altered depending on weather conditions, availability in Refuges and / or other things, always thinking about safety group.
