Vega de Ario Refuge - Picos de Europa
Hiking Picos de Europa

The Cornión Massif or Western Massif of Picos de Europa National Park, was the origin of Picos de Europa National Park, originally called the Covadonga Mountain National Park, and the first National Park in Spain. It's the largest and most varied of the three massifs that make up the Picos de Europa National Park. This massif brings together the contrasts of the intense green of the pastoral fertile plains, with the aridity of the characteristic limestone rock of the Picos, together with the spectacular singularity of the Covadonga Lakes. It is the massif where the Refuge of Vega de Ario is located, in the shepperfold of the same name, with one of the best views of all the Refuges located in the National Park. A place that won't leave you indifferent.

Meeting point: Parking del Repelao in Covadonga.                                    Duration: 2 days.

Day 1: On our first day of trekking, we will depart from Lake Ercina (1,100m) , on a beautiful day that transits through the most beautiful Vegas in the Picos de Europa. We head towards the Buferrera mines to learn about the history of this place and from there to the prince's viewpoint. We will take course to the Majada de Belbín , beautiful place. We continue through beautiful plains such as Parres and Arnaedo , covering part of the Reconquest route to the Collado de Sierra Buena, where we will deviate to ascend to the Vega de Ario refuge (1,630m) , where we spend the night. Impressive place on the Cares and excellent viewpoint of the Massif Central. If the day is good, we can ascend the Jultayu (1940m) , a spectacular viewpoint over the Leonese town of Cain and the Cares gorge , to enjoy impressive views.

Day 2: If the Jultayu peak could not be ascended the day before, we'll do it this day, whether conditions are favorable. From the summit of Jultayu, we'll descend to Covadonga Lakes by the normal route, crossing more shepperfolds and a small beech forest to reach Lake Ercina. We'll make the round to the Mosquital Peak to know all the surroundings of the Lakes of Covadonga and return to the parking of Lake Ercina, where our beautiful adventure ends.
